Lien se Lankstaanskoene | Die Besoek (2) | English Summary

Lien se Lankstaanskoene by Derick van der Walt

Die Besoek (2)

Lien goes to visit her dad in jail. She sees he has gotten grey, he is bent over, and he looks sad. He has an unusual pull at his mouth, and he seems ready to cry when he sees her. Lien wants to be angry and scream that she hates him but instead, all she can think is "my pa, my pa" (my dad, my dad), referring to him as her "dad" for the first time in the novel. At first, Lien pulls her hand away when her dad tries to hold it, and immediately she feels bad for doing it, but when he tries again, she lets him take her hand. Lien's dad tells her that he thought he would never see her again. She asks him why he did what he did, and he explains to her that he was greedy. He tells her he will be released in six months and will stay with family members- Frank and Poppie. He explains that he will start working to contribute to the family expenses. Lien leaves him with his favorite food, a packet of 'droëwors.'
