Lien se Lankstaanskoene | A change of scenery | English Summary

Lien se Lankstaanskoene by Derick van der Walt

A change of scenery

Lien and Wouter make peace after their quarrel. She is jealous when she sees Wouter chatting to two other girls as she is afraid her best friend will be taken away from her. They go to Wimpy, their usual spot, for a drink where they plot to go to the matric farewell in outfits that will shock the other people. Lien gets a job from Dirkie at the hairdresser, Millennium Creations. She plans to use half of her earnings to pay for weekly groceries and the other half to save for a plane ticket. She decides to audition for the play that Ms. Breytenbach suggests. She reads the role of Maria, a weird girl who does not say much. When Lien arrives home, she realizes her mom has made dinner other than scrambled eggs. Lien is surprised as this is something her mom has not done in ages, and her mom does not look as drunk as usual. She says that her mother does not look as 'yellow' (geel) as usual. The family has dinner together and talks about their day, which is an unusual occurrence. After dinner, her brother offers to help her with the dishes. The three of them laugh in the kitchen together. Lien wonders why her mother is not her usual self, but this change in her mother quickly subsides as Lien sees her mother sauntering off to her room with the wine bottle.

***

A video shows a man in a tuxedo and a lady in a royal blue dress. They are standing on the sidewalk next to white Iceberg-roses. The man holds the lady by the arm while they look into the camera, and the man says something that makes her laugh.

The person watching the video takes it out of the video player, tosses it in a box with the other videos, and turns the TV off.
