Lien se Lankstaanskoene | n Kakofonie van klanke | English Summary

Lien se Lankstaanskoene by Derick van der Walt

n Kakofonie van klanke

In chapter three, we discover that Lien's mother has a love for music, especially classical music. Lien starts her new job as a waitress in Malie's Garden coffee shop, where most customers are pensioners. The coffee shop is garden themed

and has flower imagery from floor to ceiling. The coffee shop owner, Malie, has bright orange hair, and the other two waitresses working at the shop are named Sophie and Agnes. The owner reprimands her for charging clients less than she should have and feels upset that she is wrongly in trouble. However, Wouter makes her feel better when he comes to the coffee shop to support her and walk her home. Lien and Wouter became friends on the first day of school due to an equal distaste toward their new school, Jakaranda. In the last part of chapter three, Lien asks in a non-literal manner 'where her mother is' and 'when she is coming back.' These rhetorical questions suggest that Lien feels like her mom is not the way she used to be when she(Lien) was a child. She has changed, possibly due to her alcoholism. Tannie Bets, the lady who lives in the same apartment block as Lien, does a lot for the family, such as helping Lien find a job and bringing food, e.g., the soup and buns on the counter when Lien comes home from work.
