Lien se Lankstaanskoene | Lientjie Lieflik | English Summary

Lien se Lankstaanskoene by Derick van der Walt

Lientjie Lieflik

Lien is in an accident at the coffee shop when she collides with Agnes and breaks several of the coffee shop's glasses and plates. She is then told by Malie to pay for the accident or leave and never come back. Lien decides to quit her job at the coffee shop and tells Malie that she will pay for the damages when she has the money. When Lien is home, she is visited by a priest who invites them to a youth sermon. After the priest has left, Lien reprimands herself for being so unnecessarily rude toward the priest who had just meant well. Lien takes 'tannie Bets' her pot back and enjoys a piece of Blackforest cake with her. She wishes she could stay in ‘tannie Bets' homely and comforting apartment. ‘Tannie Bets’ tells Lien that she can ask Dirkie in apartment 401 for a job at his hairdressing salon. Lien believes that Wouter has deserted her. He no longer shares her anger towards the school, and he has become increasingly interested in school social life. The next morning Lien wakes up earlier than usual to go to school to avoid Wouter, who always waits for her at the telephone box.
