Lien se Lankstaanskoene by Derick van der Walt

Die welcome-home-Mammie-ding

Lien's mom is home, and when Lien sees her, she looks fragile and skinny. She embraces Lien and says that she missed her, but Lien feels uncomfortable and tells her that she has to go to work. Lien feels hatred toward herself for not embracing her mom. She does not know why she is unable to forgive her. Tibbey tells Lien that life did not create her mom or dad well and that she must not do the same. He adds that her mom might need some extra care and love. When Lien returns home, she hears the piano playing and her mom's old ritual of pouring wine into a glass. When she enters the house, she smells food cooking, and when she tastes the liquid in the glass, it is Appletiser; Lien is relieved. When she turns around, she sees her mom looking at her and feels guilty for checking the glass. Lien quickly makes an excuse and leaves for rehearsal at school. At rehearsal, Hein asks Lien to the matric farewell, but she declines as she is going with Wouter. When Lien comes home, she sees her mom and Braam chatting as if nothing has happened. Lien is angry that her mom and brother act as if things have not been unpleasant for the past two years. At the dinner table, Lien's mom apologizes for the past two years. Lien still feels anger toward her mom and herself. At home, Lien feels angry at how everyone is nice to each other. She considers it fake. Lien can see Braam watching her mother closely just as she does. She can see her mom is unsure of herself.
