Tot Siens, Koning Arthur | Chapter 1: Guinevere | English Summary

Tot Siens, Koning Arthur deur Annelie Ferreira

LETTER: What few people know

In the letter that precedes the book, we learn that Sylvia van der Merwe knocked out a boy’s teeth in grade 1. She also tells us that she wants to become a doctor and that she needs a bursary. She decided that she would become a doctor at a birthday party when she saw a bird die. We also learn that her mother lives in an apartment (with no garden) in this letter.

Guinevere

Guinevere Sylvia van der Merwe doesn’t like to be called Guinevere and insists that everyone calls her Sylvia. She has to do 100 hours of community service (for theft) and is doing it at a retirement home (and apartment village), Huis Andante. Sister Pretorius escorts her around the home, showing Sylvia to the dining room. Along the way, she hears a person shout, notices an awful smell throughout the home and sees the frail care unit of the home (this is where people with severe Alzheimer’s usually go). When they arrive at the dining hall, Sylvia is introduced to 2 other ladies and is given grapefruit juice to handout. She goes to the nearest table where two delusional ladies sit. She has a difficult time speaking to the ladies and thinks of what Hein would do. In this chapter, we learn that Sylvia wants to become an orthodontist and works at the Plaaskombuis.
