Chapter 12 Summary

Barries wakes up in a fright to find himself in the kitchen of Paul’s home, with the dog he had been trying to save lying motionless under a blanket. Paul explains to him that he almost died and had it not been for the dog’s barking, he never would’ve found him in time. Barries' entire body is painful, especially his head, so Paul gives him a drink of coffee and more painkillers, but these are merely short-term treatments because Paul intends to take Barries to the doctor. Barries explains that he attempted to save the dog’s life and got embroiled in a dangerous situation. Paul brings in Barries' slippers and cell phone which he left on a rock before trying to save the dog. He has a missed call from Lizette, so he calls her back and tries to explain why he has been so quiet. It turns out that Barries' mother told his friends that he no longer wants anything to do with them. After a brief conversation, Lizette’s mother approaches and so she has to hang up. Barries tries to call Floris but his phone is off. Finally, Barries calls his mother and interrogates her about the lie she told his friends, but their conversation is also cut short because she is drowning in work. Barries makes his way back to the house but is shocked to find Paul waiting on the veranda with a pistol in his hand. The dog’s condition is worsening and he is dying slowly and painfully, so Paul looks to put him out of his misery, but Barries won’t have it.
