‘n Skop in die family jewels

“I thought that you’d stop hacking if you no longer had your laptop,” says Doc Pienaar. Except that it was not Doc Pienaar in front of the computers, but the silhouette of Sergeant Botha. He had been watching Greg for the whole night, explaining that Inspector Cele was convinced that they had frightened him enough for him to stop. He tells Greg to explain, but the scene is interrupted by his phone ringing. He was speaking to Colin from the Technical Support Unit, who told him that they found a keylogger on Greg’s computer. He pretends to be surprised, saying that his antivirus program would have picked it up; however, it did not because Greg had modified his antivirus software to ignore the keylogger on his computer. Sergeant Botha repeats the explanation he got from Colin about the keylogger having to be installed both on the user’s and another computer, meaning that someone must be watching Greg without his knowledge.

Greg considers telling Sergeant Botha everything he knows about Doc Pienaar, but he reconsiders. The policeman decides not to continue before involving Inspector Cele. He sends Greg to bed, telling him that he has a very long day ahead of him given all that he must explain. His mind swirls as he tries to figure out who could have installed a keylogger on his laptop and why.

The next morning, Inspector Cele and Sergeant Botha visit Greg in his room and before they begin their questioning, Greg solicits a deal from them. He admits his wrongdoing with the hacking but explains that there is someone else involved in Eckhardt’s disappearance. The police step outside for a private conversation before telling him that they spoke to the public prosecutor and that they are not promising anything, but there is a chance he could be pardoned. Botha tells Greg to retrieve the rest of the files that he was printing the previous night. After the printing is complete, Greg, the inspector, and the sergeant are approached by TJ. He tells Greg about the morning news: another person died of the avian flu after suffering bleeding from his orifices. Inspector Cele looks at Greg, clearly realising the connection between the pack of printouts in her hand and the news she just heard.
