Greg is surprised at Eckhardt’s question and shouts that he has never tried to hack a computer. Greg believes that all hackers are criminals who seek to cause chaos for people by doing things like deleting or stealing files, stealing money, and otherwise compromising the sanctity of any virtual infrastructure. Eckhardt explains that hackers are more diverse than that and that the popular conception of hackers is based on a type of hacker called a “cracker”. These are the malicious brand of hacker that is commonly referenced in media as well as colloquially. Hackers consist of “white hats” and “black hats”, hackers with contrasting ethics where white hats are simply curious to explore the possibilities, test the integrity of security and even have a discourse about the vulnerabilities present in certain sites or virtual infrastructures. Eckhardt tells Greg the story of Zyklon, a 19-year-old American hacker who managed to infiltrate the White House network, gaining access to virtually everything through a small yet crucial exposure in the code running the White House website. Intrigued and excited by everything Eckhardt has to say, Greg asks him to teach him how to hack.
