It is Saturday evening at Lawson College and the atmosphere is electric after they crush the day’s opponents in rugby. The boarding houses are having a braai and the prefects have been told to be on high alert for any alcohol being smuggled onto the premises. The chefs have been ordered by Doc Pienaar to cook up a feast. Greg talks to Nicole on the phone and she tells him that she will be with her friends for the night. After the phone call, Greg slips away from the braai and finds Eckhardt sitting by himself away from the noise. He does not feel like socialising and Greg tells him that he feels the same way sometimes, saying that he wishes he could hold everybody at arm’s length the way Eckhardt does. Eckhardt does not enjoy such an existence, saying sometimes he wishes he was Greg, rather than some loner, but he also has no idea what the future holds for Greg, so he cannot be sure that he will still want to be Greg when that time comes.

They continue with hacking lessons, with Eckhardt drilling the skills of social engineering into Greg. “Never let fear influence your decisions,” says Eckhardt. Greg realises that the hacking is eating into the time he has for his school commitments, but he is not concerned by that because, for the first time since his brother’s death, Greg feels alive.
