Log File: Nicole

Back at school after the April holidays, Greg remembers his father’s instructions for the coming rugby season. He begins practising by himself after school, putting in a heavy amount of effort to distract himself with thoughts about his academics. These days, Greg is learning about things like war dialling, which involves using a computer to ping several telephone numbers in hopes that one number will be assigned to a modem – a possible place of entry. Eckhardt explains to Greg the uses of a program called TELNET, which works like a trojan; however, using TELNET to send data is not secure. Eckhardt explains Secure Shell (SSH) to Greg. It is a virtual tunnel created between two computers. The data that passes through the tunnel is encrypted and the whole thing works in the same way as email encryption.

Their conversation is interrupted by a phone call from Nicole, who calls to vent to Greg about her parents not letting her attend a Black-Eyed Peas concert with her friends. Greg tries to comfort her as she cries on the line, before asking how Clarissa and Candy were getting to the concert. When Nicole tells Greg that they are being taken by a few guys they know, he feels immediately relieved that her parents declined. Nicole says something that makes Greg’s stomach tighten. He tries to talk her out of possibly harming herself, but she ignores him to ask when he will be visiting her next. He does not know, but he thinks it could happen during the June holidays. She tells him that she wishes he were there with her and he agrees. They sit in silence for a few moments before Nicole begins crying again. When she calms down, Greg makes her promise that she will not do anything irresponsible.
