Chapter 51: Magic

The nerves are getting to Tiaan as he and the other members stand in front of the crowd, ready to play for the victory. Bongi starts them off and as if Tiaan’s body is on autopilot, he plays. It doesn’t start off too well and during his guitar solo, Tiaan’s guitar loses a string. His heart falls to his shoes, but he plays on as best as he can. The only good thing about that performance was the fact that everyone from their school sang the song Maak Lemonade word for word. After their first song, Liezl jokes to the crowd that Tiaan had a bit too much enthusiasm on the guitar and everyone laughs and cheers. She asks for their patience as they make a plan.

The organisers have a spare on them for emergencies. Tiaan gratefully takes the guitar and the crowd applauses. He plugs it in and plays a riff. Liezl prepares the crowd for Van My Kop Af and it goes much better than the first. The lights dim and the crowd goes mad. Even after hearing her sing the song so many times, Liezl’s singing still gives him goosebumps.

Tiaan can’t quite identify the feeling he has. He feels slightly out of breath. Perhaps it’s how one feels when they’ve outdone themselves. Or when they’ve outplayed all the other bands. Or maybe it’s the certainty of victory. At the end of their performance, the lights come back on and the crowd cheers.
