Chapter 34: Wiskunde en ‘n Jackpot-vraag

Tiaan mentions how people who don’t know what they want to be in the future are often told to do mathematics. Tiaan hates maths. He doesn’t know what he wants to be in the future, but he has decided to steer completely clear of maths in his future. He can’t seem to focus and his mind feels cloudy. He ends up typing words on his calculator the way he used to in primary school. “75317”. When he turns the display upside-down, it spells a variant of “Liezl”. He can’t understand why they haven’t gotten the chance to talk about something other than the band, the way they did when they were in her backyard. He thinks she might think he’s crazy. He can’t get to talk to her alone either because she and Bongi are always together. He changes his laptop screensaver to a picture of the band mid-practice. He thinks about how the band thing actually seems to be going well at their school. People actually like Maak Lemonade.

Without thinking, he calls Liezl. They chat for a bit and then he suggests that they make band print T-shirts that they could give away as prizes in a competition on the school radio station. He can feel himself talking too fast. He tells her that he’s got a few ideas that he could show her, if she could come over or he could go over to her. She first tells him she’s busy, but then she tells him she’ll be over in about 30 minutes. Tiaan is confused by his own actions.
