Chapter 19: Mal

Having finished painting their new practice venue, Tiaan worries that the teachers won’t be too happy about the music note accents they painted onto the walls, but Liezl is convinced they’ll like it. Bongi’s cousin brought their music instruments to the venue with his bakkie. Liezl jokingly paints both Zane and Tiaan’s faces when they complain about the work they’ve done over the course of the weekend. Everyone is naturally hungry and tired. Bongi suggests that they have a first practice in their new place, but Zane comments that if the paint fumes and hunger take him out, they should continue without him. Bongi announces that she brought lots of sandwiches and lemonade for the band. They jokingly toast each other with the lemonade and then they eat in silence for a while before Bongi asks if anyone made any progress with song-writing. Everyone except Zane had an attempt but didn’t feel like it was worth pursuing. Tiaan mentions his idea of writing about lemons or lemonade, pulling out the sticky notes he wrote on earlier on. “My heart is a lemon” catches Liezl’s attention and even Bongi likes the sound of it. “My heart is a lemon, and you are sugar. Let’s make lemonade!” Finally, the ball starts rolling.
