Chapter 9: Oudisies

They head over to the school orchestra and Zane tells them that they need a vocalist and a drummer. Marx tries to help by reminding members that they were always complaining about the boring pieces they do, now is the chance for them to do something exciting. Liezl raises her hand to ask why they have to be the ones to audition when they’re the ones who take music. She adds that Tiaan and Zane must audition for them. Tiaan and Zane pick up their guitars and there is some applause. They play Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit and people enjoy the music, but Marx asks the class what could be missing. Someone quips “Kurt Cobain”. Other than Kurt Cobain’s voice, the sound needed some drums, so Frik volunteers to try his hand at the drums, but his playing is terrible. Frik should stick to the cello. They switch to looking for vocals and a pair of girls who performed at the talent show sing “Mother, I Want a Man”, which has its fair share of positive responses.

They weren’t being considered for the band, but Linette and Cecile definitely broke the ice. After hearing a few more singing auditions, there is some commotion in one of the front lines. One of Liezl’s friends puts her on the spot, saying that she’s really good. After some coaxing by the rest of the orchestra, Liezl heads to the front of the class and tells Tiaan and Zane to play Smells Like Teen Spirit again. She blows everyone away, but before she goes back to her place, someone says “Wait, sing it again”. Sibongile “Bongi” comes forth, looking to play the drums. Frik bursts out laughing, but Bongi quickly puts him in his place. They begin playing the song and Bongi’s drumming blows everyone away. When the song ends, everyone is shocked into silence, but Marx reminds them that their practice time is over and calls Tiaan and Zane over to get the competition entry forms. He also tells Tiaan and Zane to never take over his orchestra practice time again.
