Chapter 5: The Bet
Welcome back to Koffieklets, the local coffeeshop. It is a quiet Thursday afternoon. Jak is dressed in his ripped denim jeans and a Green Day T-shirt, and Julia, his long-time friend, is wearing her favorite T-shirt. They are cleaning tables and chatting.
Jak asks Julia if she seriously thinks she can persuade Natasja, the popular new girl at school and Jak’s crush, to go to the Spring Dance with him. Julia insists that it's not difficult to impress someone like Natasja. To illustrate, she uses the Golden Rule of Julia’s mother's coffee shop - give the customer exactly what they want. Julia suggests that they find out Natasja's preferences to make Jak appealing to her. Jak is initially hesitant, as he know when Julia's eyes sparkle like this, she is plotting something that could potentially land them in trouble.
However, Julia insists on making a bet with Jak. If Jak does as she instructs, Natasja will agree to go to the Spring Dance with him. If she is right, Jak will owe her a week's worth of tips. Jak is taken aback yet eventually agrees, swayed possibly by the idea of Natasja.
Julia then says she will find out as much as she can about Natasja's likes and dislikes, favorite films, music, and perfume. When Jak asks how she will accomplish this, Julia responds with a gleam in her eyes, "Easily. Just you wait and see."
