Full summary

Chapter 9: Frankie discovers an uneasy atmosphere at home. Her father vibrating with energy because of a guest speaking event at a food and wine festival and the lingering event of the balloon and graffiti. Frankie talks with her mother about the graffiti, which despite being beautiful, they both acknowledge remains vandalism. They discuss the invasion of private space graffiti represents, whether it's flowers on walls or haikus on car windows. As Frankie watches TV, her friend Jana calls making her promise to hang out or their friendship is over. Deciding not to share about the balloons yet, due to too many questions it would raise, she agrees to a meeting in Mouillepont. Frankie removes the remaining balloons from her house, hiding them in her room, and changes her clothes for the outing with Jana. Before she leaves she tries to borrow money from her mother who insists on knowing outing details before giving Frankie the cash. She suffers through the interrogation and leaves to wait for Jana by a grey meter box, where the words 'All you need is love' sparkle silver-white in the sun, but, when Jana arrives Frankie backs away from the box. She doesn't want to explain; she is trying to understand it herself.
